The Two Most Depressing Things in the World...

1- Seeing an abandoned stuffed animal in a trash can or on the side of the road

2- Watching a balloon floating away in the sky

Both very, very sad things indeed. Thankfully card collecting is rarely an emotional downer. But somewhere down that list, nestled warmly between expired chocolate milk, and sugar free cotton candy rests the feeling you get walking out of a card shop without any cardboard in hand.

I almost had that happen today. I was on my way to the card shop in my former town, going over the list of supplies I needed in my head one last time so I wouldn't forget anything. This shop is great for boxes, they have countless amounts of them. That's really what they focus on, so singles and packs are an after thought. Usually they'll break up a few boxes of the newer stuff to pack out, so in this case Topps flagship, A&G, National Circle or whatever the hell it is, etc etc.

Anyway, I figured if I happened to come across anything interesting, I'd pick up a pack. If not, I'll get what I needed and actually walk out with an extra dollar. I got my stuff, looked in the case and saw the usual along with some rack packs of 2008 Upper Deck for $2 each! I jumped on that like a gopher on a dandelion and walked out with 2 of the racks. I honestly know very little about '08 Upper Deck, but then factor in the different insets and odds for retail stuff and I'm really clueless. I had no expectations whatsoever going into this and it's likely for the better.

I'll start by saying this. I was really fucking proud of the fact that I had never pulled any of these abominations...

...and now my pride dies. Anyone want these?

I'm guessing these are the Rack Pack inserts as they were 1 per pack. I actually kindda like the design and apparently there are Auto'd versions of these. The pack searchers must have had a field day with these when they came out. Mine were all on the outside, facing up towards the clear plastic wrapper.

A wee wittle Wright for the PC. I'm actually leaning toward throwing this in the team set binder as opposed to the Wright binder right now. You guys probably couldn't care less about that, sooo yeah. I pulled 2 more Mets as well, so that made me happy.

Alex Rodriguez. I hate everything about you and your life. I was truly hoping your hotel room would catch on fire, melting the lock and locking you inside before you hit 600. Congratulations, you cheated and won. Fuck you.

O.K, I'm gonna sound like an ignorant New Yorker here for a second, but when the hell did Paul Lo Duca play for the Nationals?!?! I know I know, in 2008 but I really do not remember this at all...

So thats about the extent of interest of what I pulled today. Shuffling through the cards, they actually have a really nice feel to them. I may get a box soon if I'm feeling frisky enough.

  1. If you want to dump those YSL cards, I think there are a bunch of groups collecting them to auction off for charity. The one that comes to mind is the one on the Bench with the proceeds going to the Jimmy V Foundation, but I'm sure there are more.

  2. My son loves to let his balloon go and watch it "rise to the airplanes" as he says. So that one isn't all that sad.

When I was a kid, seeing shredded 89 Topps cards on the ground while I walked to school was a real downer...
