New Want List Page

Fact of the Day:
Unfrosted Blueberry Pop-Tarts have more calories than Cookies and Cream Pop-Tarts.
The hell?

I've posted a new want list page over to the right! The new "Sets Want List" page will be the top 10 Mets teams sets that I'm looking to finish off and once I'm able to knock one out, I'll replace it with a new one. They'll consist mostly of either new(er) releases or of older junk wax sets that should have been completed long ago but for one reason or another they just never did.

Yay!

Tradewinds: The Prowling Cat

Today we celebrate two packages of cards sent from The Prowling Cat. In honor of this selection of cardboard by our favorite blogging feline, we look at some interesting facts you may or may not already know about, you guessed it, Porcupines!!!

Even though porcupines are rodents, their Latin name "Erethizon dorsatum" means "quill pig".

Porcupines are nocturnal and are excellent climbers who spend most of their time in trees.

A porcupines quills are actually specialized hairs and there can be as many as 30,000 quills on a single porcupine.

The best way to remove a porcupine quill is to pull it straight out. The quills are delicate and can break easily, so be careful!

Baby porcupines are born with soft quills, which harden in about an hour.

A baby porcupines is called a porcupette.

Porcupines can not throw their quills. They have a muscle that can raise and lower them, but they can not fling them at a predator.

1996 Mike Piazza Summit "Ballparks"

Fact of the Day:
A baby Puffin is called a Puffling
*adorable*

This had been one of those cards that everyone has. You know, one of those "I should pick this card up already." It's not rare and I don't need it to finish anything off, but I just kept seeing copy after copy on ebay never to actually bid on it. Usually I was after something else specifically or it was priced too high, etc. I was finally able to bring it home as a throw in with another card.

Not as over the top as many mid '90's cards, especially as far as inserts are concerned, but it does still have that qualitative time stamp on it. The unnecessary and boarder line excessive use of foil on the right, the "larger than life" image of Piazza over Dodger Stadium and the the huge serial numbering on the back. Any insert or parallel today #'d/8,000 wouldn't even bother to have the print run stamped. In '96 however, this was pretty exclusive.

I'm always happy to pick up an insert like this, and I do like the design. It's fun, it's '90's, it's Piazza! As I get to obtain more and more of his cards, the goals begin to shift a little bit. Or perhaps new goals begin to arise would be a better way to put it. There are a few sets now where I can look at the master checklist and say "Hey, I only need one or two more Piazzas from this set!". And then there's always the prospect of world domination. There's always that.

Mexico vs Canada

First, let me direct you to Roberto over at Vin Scully is my Homeboy. He did his post first and probably better than I will.

Wow, really?
I know some people will agree and others will take the opposite stance but I see no way in which Mexico was right. First attempt, ok he missed inside, whatever. Second? All right, it's obvious now and everyone's been warned. Then to actually continue? Well, at least he stuck to his guns I guess.

I'm having a hard time believing that was really called for. It's a short tournament and there's incentives for scoring as many runs as you can. Plus, it's already controversial about teams allowing their best players to participate in the WBC as it is. I can only imagine how many GMs are watching this now and shitting themselves over the possibility that their MVP could be the recipient of a retaliatory HBP or tear up their knee in a resulting fight.

Mexico was wrong. Flat out. That's my thought. The only thing I'm not agreeing on Canada with was them redirecting and responding to the fans afterwards.

Text of the Day:
(sent to my best friend)
Honestly, sometimes, I wish you were black so that my life could be more like Scrubs.

It's ok, I'm not going to do a detailed breakdown of each insert set or an in-depth analysis of the photography of each base card.

Nope. This is just a good ol' fashioned trade list of the years latest set. I bought a blaster with the hopes of flipping the contents for some Mets goodness, new and old.
