Life, man...

About 4 years ago, I got a laptop. That same laptop has been out of commission for 2 years now after the dog jumped on the screen.

About 10 years ago, my parents got a desktop that has since been passed on to me. That desktop shit the bed last night.

With the whole "starting up my own business" thing I'm doing right now, I kindda need a computer so I set out to Best Buy after work. So I get going and realized that I had an appointment in an hour, just enough time for me to do... nothing! So I drove around trying to think what I could do and of course the first thought was "go to the card shop". I just did a spending spree so I'm trying really hard to be at least half way responsible with my money for a bit, so I fought every urge to go in. I drove by it 3 more times, dying a little inside each time, but still holding up to my commitment. After grabbing something to eat, getting a drink somewhere else, getting gas, checking my bank account and going over all the grips I know on a baseball I decided it was time to visit the card shop. Damn.

If I saw any interesting packs, I might pick one up. This shop does mostly boxes, so packs and single are few and far between, usually just a box or two of the newer stuff busted up for packs. I looked around and nothing I haven't busted before, except for some Signature Stars. "Nah, not today" I thought. Looked at some supplies, but didn't need anything. I looked at the boxes and picked out no less than 50 I wanted, but actually was able to restrain myself. A new guy asked if I needed help and I told him I'm just trying to waste some time. He asked if I was looking at Magic or...

"No..." I said
"...baseball cards dude. I may be a nerd, but I have my limits."

It felt good to say that.

I paced back and forth a few times and finally broke down and got 2 packs of the Signature Stars. I opened them in the truck, which I have never done, I always have been able to wait 'till I got home. Anyways, I opened them up and got nothing better than a Tim Hudson card. FML.

So I found my way to my appointment (haircut, I look frickin' sexy by the way) and frolicked off to Best Buy. Now, I know nothing about computers. I actually know more about cars, than I do computers. And I know more about Fig Newtons than I do about cars. And know more about time travel, than I do Fig Newtons. So it is completely without exaggeration that I can say that I know more about time travel than I do computers. 1GB? No idea what that is.

So I bring my busted laptop in to see if they can fix it and they (of course) tell me that it's not worth it and I should buy a new one. I asked them again, how much it would cost to fix it and they told me about $500 and that they have to send it out and woe is them. I decided to go ahead and check out new ones in that price range and found a couple that looked interesting. I asked someone for help (preferably a cute nerdy tech girl and yes, I did ask for that) but they replied with... well, not her.

I asked him what the difference was between the 3 (meaning which company sucks, which one is overpriced and which one is juuuuuuuust right) and he went on about memory and GB and RAM etc. I told him I really didn't know anything about computers, for instance "I have no idea what a GB is."
"A GB is 1,000 MB" he replied.
"Fuck you" was my rebuttal.

It felt good to say that.

I fended for myself for a little longer, but ultimately found one for $100 off at Office Depot. I'm gonna check it out again tomorrow and hopefully they'll still have one. I hijacked a computer to do this post tonight, so hopefully I can get my own again tomorrow and get everything back together before too long. I have to retake pictures of some cards, but first I need to get my Quickbooks installed, and the new programs and Oh yeah, figure out where the power button is. We could be in for a long night...

  1. Great post...you had me laughing the whole time. Except for your bad luck with the cards.

  2. Funny stuff. Getting my wife to read a card blog is impossible... unless it's something like this. Good luck with the new machine.
