I haven't really showcased anything from my own collection yet so I figured this would be a good start. Years ago (10 or so at this point) my uncle gave my a bag, literally a paper bag, full of old cards from when he and my father were kids. He said I could have them as long as I promise to never sell or trade them ever for anything...
...ever.
I said "K'' and waited until I got home to check them out. I was about 10 or 12 when this happened so my experience with cards never ventured too far out from Upper Deck, Topps and Collector's Choice. Of course I knew about really old cards, but never thought I'd ever have any. After all, they're worth like, a million dollars!!!
When I opened the bag, it was choked FULL of (mostly) '68 and '71 Topps! Sprinkled in were some '65s, '66s and a couple '61s. I couldn't believe it!
I did a post earlier using the Johnny Bench RC and that is one of the cards he gave me. I plan on posting most of them eventually every now and then. But for today, here's card #490 in the set...

Yup, that's what I said.
I couldn't believe that I, a 10 year old kid, was holding my very own Willie Mays and/or Mickey Mantle card!!! Oh, yeah Harmon Killebrew too!
This is the card that introduced me to snap cases. I got some for every card he gave me. Once I got older I realized I didn't need one for Steve Blass, but I'll probably keep Bob Gibson in one.
So there's my first installment of what my Uncle gave me years ago. I'll do more mostly when I pressed for time or whatnot. Hopefully you liked it, I know I enjoy seeing other people collections, to compare and contrast with.
Game's on, gotta go.
Spider's still lurking somewhere... plotting.
Good luck tonight Jon Niese! He's becoming very easy to root for and I hope he does well.
Later.

That's a sweet card my friend!! i'm putting together that 68' set and thats one of the hard cards to find!!
ReplyDeleteNice! That card looks in pretty good shape too. Uncles rule!!
ReplyDeleteWell, that picture isn't of MY card. I don't have a camera or scanner, so I steal all the pics from online. haha My copy is in really good shape though. It would definitely rival NRMT staus if I sent it in for grading.
ReplyDeleteGreat story and memories! I bet you love the movie Arachnophobia.
