1965 Topps Embossed.
Name me one set, ANY SET, in which you can obtain a MINT copy of a genuine...
...vintage...
...original Micky Mantle card for under $40 including shipping and/or tax.
Again, we're talking Vintage Original card. Not these mind-numbing "inserts" and reprints that Topps seeds 7 per pack and thinks we're still giddy when we pull one.
"Oh, a Micky Mantle card!"
"Oh, a Micky Mantle Card!!"
"OH, A MICKY MANTLE CARD!!!"
Fuck you.
We're sick of it...
Sorry, fell apart for a second.
Anyways, the answer is this: 1965 Topps Embossed.
This was an insert set with an oddball size. (2 1/8" x 3 1/2") It's really not very popular with many collectors, which drives down the prices for people who don't want to spend $700 on a HOF legend. The card fronts are pretty cool, different at least. The American leagues reps have blue boarders to them and the National league have red boarders.
I can understand why this set wouldn't be very popular with most.

There's no real picture. It's more of a silhouette really, with gold on gold. You absolutely would not be able to tell who the player is if it weren't for the name on the bottom. As for the backs...

You got nothing. Just a lonely set number.
Still, it's a great way to pick up some vintage cards of your favorite players or team for next to nothing. The Mets team set consists of only 4 cards and I got it for around $5 combined form two different sellers AND got an Ernie Banks as a bonus as well.
Between ebay and checkoutmycards I was able to find Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Roberto Clemente, Sandy Koufax etc. for under $10-$15.
For the most part vintage is vintage, right? So if you're missing a card or two from your favorite player and/or team, check this set out. It's cheap and you won't have much competition.
