An Obsession with the Underdog: Reader Edition!

In our little circle, we all obviously collect cards. Most of us can be called "Team Collectors" and it's easy to figure out why we collect those teams. If read a post from Night Owl saying he's now collecting Astros' cards, then I'll have some questions...

Most importantly though, many of us have Player Collections that we all take great pride in. Obviously, Superstars are heavily collected. Players like Puljos, Lincecum, Ichiro and Piazza have more collectors than any mortal could count. And it's pretty easy to figure out why. They're amazing players who can do what they want seemingly at will. But some of the best collections are of those random, obscure players who have all but faded into oblivion.

So here's the question...

Who's you're "Underdog" player collection of and why do you collect them?

I don't have a formal collection yet, but will be starting one soon of Rey Ordonez. He was a slick fielding shortstop for the Mets fro the Mid 90's through the early 2000's. He couldn't hit a baseball for shit. But was a virtual vacuum cleaner in the field.

And that's why I connected with him. I was in Little League when Ordonez first broke in and saw myself as basically the same player. I was a great fielder but couldn't hit a damn. So years upon years later, I still remember and now will be on a mission (along with my Piazza collection ) to own a copy of every card ever produced of him ever in the history of the entire world!

So what's your story?

  2. I've got a great Adam LaRoche collection going... I hope that's common knowledge by now.
I dunno why I started it, but he's a cool guy and he plays the game right.

  3. I collect Matt Morris cards, he is from the same hometown from me and had several really good seasons starting for the Cardinals.

Also, I've probably got several Ordonez doubles I can send your way (I collect him too).
