Ernie Harwell Dies at 92

I'm not going to sit here and pretend like I've heard him announce a game.

I'm not going to search Google and then pretend like I'm an expert.

I am a 22 year old Mets fan who has lived in New York his entire life.

I have, however, seen over the last few months a couple interviews with him on MLB network and from those few showings, I can see why he is coveted the way he is. Soft spoken, great stories and a very easy personality to become absorbed in. From one interview I saw (I believe with Bob Costas) I loved the one story he told about Bobby Thompsons' famous home run. I can't remember word for word, but it was something along the lines of-

I just said, It's gone. So I sat down, shut up and let the sound of the crowd explain what happened.

I thought that was hilarious! Honestly, I never even knew he announced that game, because all you hear is the "The Giants win the Pennant! The Giants win the Pennant! They're going crazy!!!!" call from Russ Hodges. But Ernie was one of several announcers calling that game from all over the country. And that's just how he announced. He let the game speak for its self.

You hear this term get thrown around alot lately: "He's good for the game of Baseball"

or

"It's good for the game of Baseball"

Well, for (the few) things I've seen and the (vast) things I've heard about him, Ernie Harwell truly was, is and always will be "Good for the game of Baseball."

(...Joe)
