Box #4 3/4: 2003 Topps Chrome

Why the 3/4 you ask? Well because I still haven't finished opening the '92 Score. I've been opening a few packs here a few packs there, chipping away at it. The trading buddy I had as a kid had a ton of these cards, so it's been a blast for me to open new packs of it and remembering certain cards and players.

Anyway, we got a box to report on! 2003 Topps Chrome Series 2. Why Series 2 may you ask? Because Piazza didn't have a card in Series 1. Moving on...

Basic info: Hobby 24 packs
4 cards per pack
1 "box topper"
1 Game Used per box

What we're chasing: "Record Breakers" HOF game used.

Since we got a good number of refractors in the box, I wont post many base, just the inserts. So let's take a look...

We'll start with the Box Topper, an Uncirculated X-Fractor #57. Let's see what we got.

Scott Williamson. Damn. Still, it's the thoughest parallel of the set, so any card of your team is a good one, so congrats to the Reds!

Next up, the lone Game Used of the Group Break, actually came in the 1st pack... go figure.

Record Breakers John Smoltz Jersey. Nice looking card of a great pitcher. Is he still a free agent, or is he on the DL?

Barry Bonds Black Border #/199. The Black Borders fall 1:17 packs for series 2 so you can expect to get one, two per box if you're lucky.

When I read the odds for the Gold Borders #/449, falling 2:8 packs, I thought "Why 2:8? Just list it as 1:4."

Well, I now know why, they literally fall 2 per 8 packs. I've never seen that in any other set before, cool beans.

And lastly, your run of the mill Topps famous Refractors #/699. We actually got more Gold then we did the more common standard refracs.

I really enjoy opening Chrome stuff. The colors really come out and are intensified, plus there's a nice slick feel to it that I like. The design for this was very nice, blue borders, good photos and some nice early cards of guys like K-Rod, BJ Upton, Victor Martinez. And of course this guy...

  1. No Dodgers???? Oh, that hurts. I love that set.

  2. John Smoltz hot box! Smoltzie is a free agent currently working as an announcer for the Braves. I pray every day that someone, ANYONE, signs him to pitch because he is awful.

  3. Sweet. I get a gold refractor. That made up for no Pirates in the last box.
