Tackling the Stack

First post off the stack of cards I sorted through this weekend is gonna be Piazza based.

I picked up 31 Piazza cards off COMC just before the holidays (number purely coincidental). I focused on getting '93 and '94s only to try and take a chunk out of what I need to finish off those years. Let's take a look at some of my favorites...

This is a complete "nerding out" card for me. It's combining card collecting and astronomy into one glorious, single... thing. This is from the '93 Fun Pack set in which this is Piazza's only card. Next years set, 6 Piazzas. Yup.

Next up is my thumb uhhhh, I mean '94 Leaf "Slideshow". There's alot of chipping around the edges, but I can always upgrade later if I really need to. I had to hold the card up against the door and take the picture mid-air because the "film" picture wasn't showing up against the black pillow case I use as my backdrop. The odds on pulling one of these is 1:54 and the picture does look and feel just like camera film, but it's really acetate. Pretty sneaky Leaf.

This is form the era when Upper Deck had a boner for putting holograms on cards. Don't get me wrong, they look really cool, but still. This is the '94 "Holoview FX Blue" which is the more common vs the "Red" die cut version. If you're looking to pick up a Piazza version of the latter, good luck finding one for under $60, $80 is the typical number. This "Blue" however, $0.75.

And that brings us to Topps' boner, chrome. Once Topps realized they struck gold with the '93 Finest set, they went ape shit crazy and starting chroming everything... and haven't really stopped. This is the '94 Topps Traded Finest Insert which came only in '94 factory sets.

This is a really nice looking card. When you think early Pinnacle, you think bland, flimsy card stock with minimum gloss. This is a '93 Pinnacle "Home Run Club" and it's very glossy, chromed (well, their version at least) and best of all, shinnnnnnnnnnnnyyyyyyyyy.

Lastly we have this. It's from '94 Collectors Choice and I had no idea what it was... or is, really. I had never seen it before and it definitely wasn't on my radar until I saw it and picked it up. It's a game piece type thing and it open up to the board...

It pits the Dodgers against the Giants with each of their starting lineups. Each name has a scratch off thingy that reveals a hit, or out and you can choose the order of the lineup or some shit. I tried to figure it out, but it just made my brain hurt.

So that's just the Piazza's I picked up on my own. I have a few more from the Mets lot and a couple from trades. Stay tuned!
