First, let me direct you to Roberto over at Vin Scully is my Homeboy. He did his post first and probably better than I will.
Wow, really?
I know some people will agree and others will take the opposite stance but I see no way in which Mexico was right. First attempt, ok he missed inside, whatever. Second? All right, it's obvious now and everyone's been warned. Then to actually continue? Well, at least he stuck to his guns I guess.
I'm having a hard time believing that was really called for. It's a short tournament and there's incentives for scoring as many runs as you can. Plus, it's already controversial about teams allowing their best players to participate in the WBC as it is. I can only imagine how many GMs are watching this now and shitting themselves over the possibility that their MVP could be the recipient of a retaliatory HBP or tear up their knee in a resulting fight.
Mexico was wrong. Flat out. That's my thought. The only thing I'm not agreeing on Canada with was them redirecting and responding to the fans afterwards.

Yep. Mexico should be happy Brett Lawrie wasn't there, or else there would have been murders.
ReplyDeleteOh wow, yeah didn't think of that. That would not have been a good move on their part.
DeleteI agree that intentionally nailing Tosoni was uncalled for, but at the same time you could totally see how things escalated. After several hard slides and a bunt single with a huge lead late in the game (although totally understandable in this situation... it's usually classified as unsportsmanlike), Team Mexico was fed up.
ReplyDeleteThis is definitely one of those situations where a person's point of view will come into play.
I agree with Fuji. Like many situations in life, there's a number events that were the causes.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, a lot of folks out there like one single target to blame everything on.
"it's Luis Cruz's fault", or "it's the manager for Team Mexico's fault".
Life and baseball fights aren't always that simple. A lot of conditions had to rise to create the situation, not just one.
