does anyone here play the game?

Nope, this is all about the back. It commemorates the discovery of 4 of Jupiters moons by Galileo. Awesome. I fucking love astronomy!
Basically, popular belief at the time, due in large part to biblical passages and Aristotelian Cosmology, was that the earth was the center of the universe and that all extraterrestrial bodies revolved around the earth (a geocentric universe). Galileo wasn't the first to develop the idea that the earth revolved around the Sun (heliocentric) but his discovery of Jupiters moons provided the first physical evidence of Copernicus' heliocentric model.
One of the discovered moons is Europa, which many believe has the best possibility of life either to develop or already having developed within our solar system. G didn't know this (that's right, I call him G) but underneath a thick layer of ice (I've heard everywhere from 15 to 60 miles thick, so I'm not sure) it's believed that liquid water (i.e- Huge friggin' ocean) could exist! Couple that with an oxygen rich atmosphere and yeah, it's possible.
That's right, the only thing I nerd out harder on than Astronomy, is baseball. But at least now you can say you learned something. Unless you already knew this, then well... I dunno.
Maybe next time I'll remember that this is a card blog.

Awesome, Joe - love those kind of factoids. Most of my Jupiter moon knowledge is, I'm afraid, based on Stanley Kubrick films. So, I knew Europa was potentially the site for life but I did NOT know that the ice layer was THAT thick?! Whoa......
ReplyDeleteWell, alot of my interest with the possibility of time travel was sparked by Donnie Darko, sooo yeah. haha
